Continual Self-Improvement: Three Golden Rules

Posted by Sean Huckstep | January 11, 2018

Self-Improvement: the Key to Sales Mastery

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. Most of us love routines, so without a good reason to veer from our favorite paths, we might never seek a new perspective. However, those people who strive for constant self-improvement are the type to embrace change and look for opportunities to learn something new. In the world of business and sales, they’re the game-changers. If you’ve ever met someone like this, you might call them “inspiring” or “admirable,” but there is no reason you can’t be one of them yourself. These three golden rules for constant self-improvement will get you moving in the right direction.

Set the Tone

First things first: Only you are in charge of your outlook. The top thing that motivational speakers advise is to not let your surroundings or circumstances dictate your attitude. Even in the face of adversity, you have to keep moving forward in the way that makes sense to you, not in the way outside influences may be trying to force you to go. Also, don’t be distracted by what other people are doing; just stay focused on your own experience and goals. If you don’t compare yourself to others, you face a lot less self-doubt, and positivity is a huge part of self-improvement.

Here are some key actions to keep in mind:

  • Be proactive instead of reactive. Don’t let your circumstances govern your outlook. You get to decide what your actions will be.
  • Think about what people will say about you at your funeral. It may sound a little morbid, but consider how you want to be remembered. Were you the person who was always trying to get better at life?
  • Stay focused on your own improvement. Don’t worry about what others are doing. You can’t control that, so just control your own actions.
  • Go into every day with a positive attitude about what can be accomplished. If you believe a goal can be reached, research shows you are much more likely to reach it.

Create Goals

Now that you are in the right mindset, it’s time to figure out where you want to be after your self-improvement work is done. Think about what the end result will be and work your way backward to figure out the steps it will take to get there. Creating a network of goals will keep you motivated to move forward. For example, if you work in d2d sales and your self-improvement goal is to earn the top award in the office for the next year, you can talk to your supervisor about what it will take to get there. Be sure to create manageable goals using measurable tactics.

This door to door guide can help:

  • Name the end goal. If you don’t know what specific improvement you want to make, you will struggle to stay on the path to success.
  • Avoid distractions or influences that take you in other directions. If your goal is top sales, watch out for people who try to drag you into another project.
  • Take the plan one day at a time. The big picture is important, but it’s reached in tiny steps.
  • When you reach a goal, celebrate! Then set yourself a new goal.

Seek Greatness

One of the best ways to improve yourself is to find someone you admire and set a plan to be like them. If you surround yourself with like-minded people who share your priorities, it will be easier to reach your self-improvement goal. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most people love to see other people succeed, and they will help you get there, if you simply ask. Then, seek out opportunities to pay that mentorship forward to others.

Here are some factors to include in your plan:

  • Find your tribe. Using the d2d salesperson example again, surround yourself with other successful salespeople. Pick their brain about best practices.
  • Ask for advice. Getting help in self-improvement is not a weakness. It is wise.
  • Be a good listener. An open mind is ripe for improvement.
  • Help others. Being a good mentor will enrich your own life.
